Today marks the close of the United Nations’ Rio+20 Conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The conference sought to bring together governments, NGOs and the private sector to tackle global poverty, inequality and environmental degradation.
The summit, held 20 years after the first conference in 1992, outlined a path for the next 20 years in a document called The Future We Want.
Some critics contend the document does not go far enough. According to the Associated Press, since the last conference, temperatures have climbed, pollution has increased, and the world has lost 740 million acres of forests.
